Alta Badia just north east of Bolzano, in the heart of the dolomites is a thoroughly authentic and genuine mountainous area with immense natural beauty in all seasons of the year, a people who are conscious of their tradition of hospitality, culture and even their own language -Ladino-very much alive even today. And as with each corner of Italy, this barely concealed strip of mountain valleys boasts a wonderful tradition of local cuisine and intreaging wines.
La Perla situated in the charming village in Corvara in the heart of Alta Badia, was one of the first hotels to opens its doors to ski tourism in Alta Badia. Today La Perla is still run by the Costa family and very much preserves its authentic style and warm traditional hospitality.
As you enter you are charmed by the cozy atmosphere and the refined décor. Rich fabrics and splendid traditional south Tyrolean pine woodwork are very much part of the style. You will find that the facilities are all geared up to pamper you, from the wonderful selection at breakfast, a feast for the eyes, to the friendly atmosphere of the bar and the various in house dining options.
An evening at the one star Michelin La Stüa of Michil reataurant offers a fine combination of haute cuisine and classic Ladin/ South Tyrolean flavors – not to be missed.
La Perla’s bedrooms are all very comfortabale with all the mod cons and often you will find authentic open fire places and cozy Ladino decor. The rooms are well-sized and each one has its individual character and its own style. Most have balconies overlooking the spectacular mountain ranges and village of Corvara.
What really impressed me about La Perla was the genuine courtesy of staff. Nothing was ever too much to ask for. Whether you are planning your week of sight seeing, private ski lessons, guided mountain hikes or Ladino cooking courses, you can find all the right tips and answers at the reception.
Be sure not to miss a guided tour of the ‘Mahatma’ in house wine cellar. This is one of the hidden gems of La Perla, but one they are proud to show you. It is a unique experience and you will be amazed at the eclectic range of wines they have there. Over 1400 Italian wine labels and an amazing collection of the famous Bolgheri, San Guido, Sassiacaia wine in a range of vintages – I have never seen such a collection! The cellar also hosts some excellent Burgandy and Bordeaux wines as well as a fine collection of Champagnes.
Finally if you just want to chill out and relax take a stroll to the wellness centre housed in the basement where you can enjoy the pool, solarium, sauna, steam bath and for further pampering try the massage and beauty centre – an experience I never say no to!
